Mentor FAQ's

How much time should I be putting in?
As much time as you can comfortably spare. There are no rules or minimum hours that are expected. We recommend setting aside a specific timing periodically where you interact with your mentees, and setting clear boundaries, both lower and upper, so that both you and your mentee have a clear idea of what to expect from your time together. If you cannot figure that out, following up once a week is a good rule of thumb.
Am I expected to teach course contents?
Technically, no. But we as well as the mentees would certainly appreciate it if you are able to do that.
What medium of communication should I use to interact with my mentee?

We encourage the use of professional communication platforms such as Slack, Zoom and GitHub (Gitter) for your discussions and collaborations.

Will I get a certificate for this?
Yes, after successful completion of SOL you will be provided with certificates.
When will I be assigned a Mentee?
As soon as the Mentor-Mentee matching phase is complete, we will release the Mentor-Mentee list, so that you could start interacting and bonding with each other well in advance.

Mentee FAQ's

How much time should I be putting in?
As much time as you can comfortably spare. There are no rules or minimum hours that are expected. We recommend setting aside a specific timing periodically such that you can complete the course you’ve undertaken in 3 months time, and setting clear boundaries, both lower and upper so that both you and your mentor have a clear idea of what to expect from your time together. If you are unable to figure that out, interacting at least once a week is a good rule of thumb.
What medium of communication should I use to interact with my Mentor?
Whatever is convenient for you and your mentor, but we strongly encourage the use of professional communication platforms such as Slack, Zoom, and GitHub (Gitter) for your discussions and collaborations.
Will I get a certificate for this?

Yes, after successful completion of SOL you will be provided with certificates.

Do I need to pay for the course?
Almost all offered courses can be accessed free of cost. Some courses need you to pay for an official certificate. Some courses do not allow you to take certain exams unless you pay for it. It is up to you if you wish to pay for the course or not. Please go through the course website very carefully before opting for the course.
What should the course report contain?
The report format will be sent to you in the beginning of SOL. It should include everything that you learn in your course. The report must be written in your own words. Plagiarism above the standard limit (~20%) will not be tolerated. References should be cited appropriately and standard report writing norms are expected. The details about this will be conveyed soon.
Why should I write a report when I am already taking the course and its exams?

The report will help in the following ways:

a) The SOL Team will understand the effectiveness of the course offered.

b) You will learn how to write a professional report - a skill very useful in academics and industry alike.

c) You can add the report to your portfolio as a proof of your understanding of the course contents.

d) The best reports will be featured on SOL website's Hall of Fame.

Why should I do a project?

It helps if a small project is done after the course to apply what one learns and a feel of the topic. Doing a project will help you strengthen your concepts of the topic/subject. Projects also stand out in the resumes.

I am an SY student. I have done some of the courses before for which I wish to mentor as well as sign up as a mentee for some other course. Am I allowed to do this?
No, you are not. FY and SY students can only participate as Mentees. If you are sure you can be a valuable mentor for any course you have already done, then we MAY allow you to mentor. (Please leave any of the team members an email in this case). But you cannot be a Mentee as well as a Mentor at the same time.
When will I be assigned a Mentor?
As soon as the Mentor-Mentee matching phase is complete, we will release the Mentor-Mentee list, so that you could start interacting and bonding with each other well in advance.
What is Hall of Fame?
The best reports and projects will be featured on SOL website's Hall of Fame.
